Things to See in Zanzibar
Whether arriving by air or water, the old district of Zanzibar, Stone Town, is likely to be your first introduction to the island. This mostly pedestrianised zone holds the majority of the cultural and historical landmarks making them easily accessible.
The western shore is dominated by the Old Fort from the 17th century, and the House of Wonders and Sultan’s Palace Museum from the 19th century. All can be explored with exhibitions in the two later historic buildings showcasing the Zanzibari and Swahili cultures. All are also easily found in front of the Forodhani Gardens where a street food market in the late afternoons and evenings make for a truly local experience.
The island’s involvement in the slave trade allows visitors to bear witness to some of the darker side of Zanzibar’s history through its monuments and historical landmarks. Located on the east side of Stone Town, the Old Slave Market provides insight into times gone by, as does Tippu Tip’s House belonging to an 18th century slave and ivory trader, while respect should be given at the Slave Monument.
Insider’s Tip: Take a walking tour of Stone Town to gain insights into either the spice trade or slave trade that made Zanzibar a major destination on shipping routes in the past.
The last indigenous forest on the island, Jozani Forest is a haven of greenery near Chwaka Bay. With occasional flood waters from the bay creating ideal conditions for a unique swamp forest, the area is home to the endangered Red Colobus Monkey which can be seen up close on many of the paths through the forest.
Things to Do in Zanzibar
Situated a half-hour boat trip from Zanzibar, Prison Island, also known as Changuu, offers a further glimpse into the island’s previous trading industry. This small island was used as a staging area where slaves were detained before journeying across the world. When slavery was abolished the island became a camp where people with deadly diseases were sent to be quarantined.
Today the island is a nature reserve and home to a sanctuary for giant tortoises where you can assist during feeding time and interact with these gentle giants, some of which are more than 180 years old.
Beaches and Reefs
Two of the most famous beaches on Zanzibar are both located on the northern tip. Where the beaches on the eastern side can be rough with strong weather coming in off the ocean, the north western side of island are more sheltered, making prime beach holidays.
Nungwi Beach on the northernmost point provides pristine white sand and clear blue waters dotted with traditional fishing boats offshore. This makes it the perfect area for holidaymakers with a range of luxury hotels and quality restaurants catering to their needs.
Kendwa Beach just a short distance southwest, is a much less built up and more laid back beach during the day for the most part, although in the evenings it can come alive with the sound of African beats.
Off the east coast Zanzibar is quite possibly some of the best snorkelling and diving reefs in the world! Take a day trip to Mnemba Atoll on a traditional dhow sailing boat with a local crew for the chance to see dolphins, and reef fish, as well as some huge trevally, yellow snapper, and barracuda. The colourful reef will mesmerise and often tours will include a seafood barbeque on the beach of a remote island as well!
Insider’s Tip: Kendwa has become popular with the backpacker crowd, but it also has its share of luxury resorts… just be aware that the beaches can be very lively at certain times of the evening!
