For some, the idea of a big wedding in the UK with all the family and friends invited is not only the dream, but also a prerequisite so as not to exclude anyone from your big day and ruffle any feathers. But if the thought of researching, planning, and organising your special day makes you dread it before it’s even arrived, then you may want to join the people now looking at having their wedding overseas.
Destination weddings have grown year on year to become one of the most popular ways to tie the knot… and why wouldn’t they? Someone works with you one-on-one to make sure all the little things run smoothly, as well as making sure all the legal stuff is done correctly, and at the end of it all, you get the most stunning wedding photos of sunsets on the beach, vineyards in the sun, or even something a little more adventurous!
Let’s take a look at some of the favourite destinations over the years that are still as popular as ever today, as well as one or two that have seen an upward trend for 2018.
A long time favourite amongst the British, Greece (and in particular the islands) see a flood of weddings each year.
With stunning sunsets over blue waters, photos from the rim of calderas, and picturesque towns and villages, Greece also has a great choice of luxury hotels; from the small and boutique to resorts that can cater for the largest of events.
It’s also nice and close for family and friends to help celebrate your day with you meaning you don’t have to compromise on the guest list!
With the dramatic increase in high quality but good value resorts, the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic has eclipsed some of the other Caribbean islands for destination weddings over recent years.
White sandy beaches under swaying palm trees make this the ideal location for those looking for a barefoot weeding, while the island’s warm hospitality makes the big day a breeze. The guests aren’t forgotten either with fantastic natural beauty to explore if they have had enough of the sun lounges!
The original and still one of the most loved of all destinations for weddings, Las Vegas holds a special place for many.
Whether eloping, having a shotgun wedding, or planning to invite the whole town, “Sin City” means you can role the stag and hen do, the wedding, and the honeymoon all into one neat package. And where else can you arrive in a Cadillac, be married by Elvis, before retiring to your penthouse suite, and not have to explain the reasons for it to anyone!
Pictured yourself with your one-and-only walking through endless vineyards having memorable photos, all while your guests enjoy a tipple of world-class wine? Well look no further than the Napa Valley in California.
Receptions take on a new meaning here with fine-dining and farm-to-table produce going hand in hand. And at only 1 hour from San Francisco and 3 1/2 hours from Yosemite National Park, your wedding could be the highlight of a magnificent Californian adventure!
Fancy truly getting away for something a bit different? Safari weddings have made their way into popularity in 2018, with some of the national parks such as Kruger offering packages to tie the knot while wildebeest, lions, elephants, and giraffes become your guests! Other reserves near Port Elizabeth offer luxury retreats for your big day in the wilderness, while also giving the ability to experience the Garden Route along the southern coast to Cape Town.
Now destination weddings aren’t for everyone, but if the thought of having to watch Uncle Arthur do The Macarena again gives you chills, you may just want to explore your options at these or one of many other destinations that can provide that perfect day!
