One of the best ways to keep you and your family ‘appy on holiday is to let technology automate and simplify some of the mundane stuff.

When planning business travel or your next holiday, navigating around an unfamiliar place or finding the best places to eat, you will often find ‘there’s an app for that’.

This is our five most essential apps for travel and holidays:

Uber When Abroad

Before Uber, we paid more for taxi rides and airport transfers, messed around with cash and cards, and had no accurate idea how quickly a cab driver would reach us.

The Uber app – and the slick business operations behind it – have made getting from A to B so much easier. The coverage is still patchy, but if you travel to the USA a lot or around major European cities, it’s pretty much unbeatable on convenience and cost.

A few clicks on the Uber app and you have a pre-agreed price, a time for your driver to pick you up, and a tracking system. Payment is automated and both you and the driver get a chance to leave a digital review.

Passwallet

Apple Wallet and Android’s Passwallet are designed to keep travellers organised and secure, by collecting together handy digital information.

This includes, for example, your airline boarding passes, itinerary and any attraction tickets that have been supplied via email. You can even collate credit, debit and store loyalty cards on the app. So you can get your Costa or Starbuck points easily “on the go”!

Both have stringent security features, to keep all your digital information safe.

Google Maps

Hands up if you’ve ever stood on street corners trying to fold a tourism map, or had a navigation-related argument in a car with colleague or family member.

Not only is Google Maps the perfect app for holidays and business travel, it’s an everyday miracle.

Choose a language (or even accent), and a voice guides you on foot or by car, illustrated clearly and succinctly. For delays ahead, it can source a different route. You can also get the Google Maps app to highlight everything from speed cameras to where to use your Passwallet to buy coffee!

Google Translate

With so many wonderful apps for travel, you may not need to talk to another human (you can even book Business Class Flights online with Just Fly Business).

If you do strike up a conversation in a foreign country, with Google Translate its easy to make yourself understood.

It’s available as a website interface, android or iOS app, and can prove vital for overseas business travel. The most sophisticated language translators may still mock it, but for normal dialogue and document writing, Google Translate is enlightening.

Yelp

There are numerous handy apps for holidays to help you to find restaurants near you, or pin down local services and attractions.

We think the best of these is Yelp. Its reviews are customer-generated and therefore largely immune from paid-for content. You get genuine insights and a way to track down some of the smaller, cosier places that only the locals know!
