Things to See in Quebec

Aerial view from above the Les Citadelle de Quebec

Old Quebec (Vieux-Quebec)

The cobbled, windy streets and narrow lanes of Old Quebec hark back to the era of the horse and cart, and with over 400 years of history it’s no wonder the entire townsite has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Noted as the first French settlement in Canada in 1608, the city lines the northern bank of the Saint Lawrence River.

Set into an escarpment, the lower town of Basse-Ville is at river level and marks the place that the city was founded by Samuel de Champlain at Place Royale in the shadow of Notre Dame des Victoires. This historic quarter is filled with fantastic architecture as well as laying claim to the oldest commercial avenue in the U.S. and Canada in Quartier du Petit Champlain. Many museums inhabit the district and are worthy of your time, such as the Museum of Civilisation detailing the progression from the earliest aborigines through New France to modern Quebec.

Up the steep embankment, the upper town of Haute-Ville can be reached by an energetic climb or by taking the Funicular from Rue de Petit Champlain to the Terrasses Dufferin. This boardwalk that runs along the escarpment offers sweeping views of the Saint Lawrence River with the iconic Chateau Frontenac as a backdrop. This grand hotel is the perfect place for a meal, drink, night, or simply to admire the interiors.

Speaking of interiors, make sure to visit Notre Dame de Quebec Basilica-Cathedral, the most important Catholic Church in the Province. The basilica was built in 1647 and is an inspiring sight of white and gold with paintings, stained glass, and frescos interspersed. Join a tour to hear more of the details and even visit the crypt if you dare.

Insider’s Tip: Although the view from the Terrasses Dufferin is amazing, for a small fee I recommend jumping on the public ferry to Levis where the views looking back to Quebec and the Chateau are breath taking!

Les Citadelle de Quebec

Stand in the pages of history at the star shaped fortress, Les Citadelle de Quebec. Overlooking the river, the Old Town, and the Plains of Abraham, this functioning military base is the official residence of Canada’s monarch and the Canadian Governor General. Built in 1820 as part of the city’s fortifications, the Citadelle offers guided tours that take you through the history of New France, and the chance to see the Changing of the Guard.

The adjacent Plains of Abraham today are a fantastic place to enjoy the open air, but also marks an important place and time in Canada’s history. The 1759 battle where the British defeated the French to gain control over all of Canada was fought on this site, and changed the country’s future irrevocably.

Fortifications of Quebec

As the only remaining fortified city north of Mexico, Quebec has a rich military past which is easily seen at the Fortifications of Quebec. A National Historic Site of Canada dating back up to 400 years, the old city walls and the four remaining gates can be explored as part of a guided tour. This also includes activities such as a musket firing demonstration, but remember to pack your walking shoes as there is still nearly 3 miles of walls available.

Montmorency Falls

Take a short drive to the northeast of Quebec City along the Saint Lawrence River and soon you will encounter an enormous waterfall spilling over the side of a cliff. Taller than Niagara by nearly 100 feet where stairs and a cable car can be taken to a suspension bridge which spans the top.

Beautiful all year round, in the winter months the spray creates a wall of ice where ice climbers can test their skills!

Quebec’s Nearby Cities

Joined by the Saint Lawrence River, Montreal is the nearest major city to Quebec, though towns such as Trois-Rivieres and Sorel line the banks between. The capital of Ottawa is joined by the Trans-Canada Highway further to the west.

Connecting business class flights to Quebec from London are often routed through the airline’s major hub cities such as New York, Chicago, Toronto, and Montreal. This also makes it easy to plan a multi-city holiday with a self-drive or rail section to explore the stunning landscapes and culture of this amazing region.

Why Choose Business Class Flights to Quebec

You may think that because the flight to Quebec must connect, that it’s not worth paying for business class, but connecting gives you another opportunity to relax in comfort at the airport lounge in the connecting city. While everyone else is dashing around or sitting in uncomfortable airport seats, you get to grab a bite to eat or a drink and actually enjoy your time.

The other reason to remember that business class flights to Quebec are important is the return journey. Although the flight connects, it will be a short flight from Quebec to the connecting city, then a long flight back to the UK. This long flight is overnight, and having the comfort of a lie-flat bed and priority boarding and baggage on arrival means you feel better and can exit the airport quicker.
