Providing visitors with insights into the history and culture of the city, from its early 19th century settlers to its vibrant local art scene, the Donkin Heritage Trail is a 3 mile walk around the city. With 51 historical sites including the City Hall,, museums, churches, and statues and sculptures, the trail is named after the acting governor of the Cape Colony, Sir Rufane Donkin.
Pick up a map from the Visitor Information Centre in Donkin Reserve and utilise the information boards along the trail as they include fascinating facts about the area. The Donkin Heritage Trail is a fantastic way to learn about Port Elizabeth!
Insider’s Tip: Donkin Reserve is also the beginning of Route 67, telling the story leading up to the 1994 elections through colourful mosaics, murals, sculptures, and poetry.
Port Elizabeth’s premier leisure and convention resort area, The Boardwalk is a hive of boutique shopping, restaurants, and entertainment. Located in Summerstrand, between the city and Cape Recife Nature reserve, The Boardwalk offers visitors a lively precinct to relax in, especially in the evening when the complex comes alive with a musical fountain show.
The nearby beaches of Kings Beach, Humewood Beach, and Hobie Beach have been given the international Blue Flag status for water quality, safety, and environmental management. During the summer months, they are immensely popular with both locals and visitors alike.
South Africa’s third largest national park, Addo Elephant National Park, is just a short drive from the city of Port Elizabeth. With 444,000 acres housing Cape buffalo, black rhinos, lions, leopards, zebras, spotted hyenas, antelope, and hundreds of species of birds, the park was critical in the saving of its namesake, the South African bush elephant.
Established in 1931, the last 11 South African bush elephants were brought back from the brink of extinction, and today more than 600 can be seen roaming the national park. Offering visitors the option of self-drive routes or a hop-on adventure with a trained guide, the Addo Elephant National Park is one of the best places to see the native fauna in the country.
Insider’s Tip: Time your trip wisely! Hot days give the best opportunity to see elephants at waterholes, while early mornings and evenings are best for lion and hyena spotting.
At only a short drive from the city centre, the Kragga Kamma Game Park welcomes day visitors for self-guided or guided safaris and takes pride in guaranteeing wildlife sightings. Home to buffalo, giraffe, zebra, and rhino, the big draw is a family of cheetahs in their own enclosure that can be seen from a catwalk above.
Those that don’t mind heights can walk the monkey bridge through a lush forest section and see monkeys and a variety of birdlife. This small game park makes a perfect day trip while on holiday to Port Elizabeth for those looking for a wildlife experience but that are a little short on time!
In the heart of the entertainment precinct, the Boardwalk Hotel & Casino caters for business events of all sizes.
With a more intimate feel, The Beach Hotel is the perfect place to hold your event after your business flights to Port Elizabeth.
Depending how you look at it, Port Elizabeth lies at either the start or the end of the Garden Route, a fantastic self-drive holiday taking in the dramatic southern coast of South Africa between here and Cape Town.
Although no one flies direct between the UK and Port Elizabeth, it is possible to have a single connection in Johannesburg or Cape Town when flying with South African Airlines, British Airways, and Virgin Atlantic (Johannesburg only).
