History buffs will recognise this city centre location instantly as it is home to several must-see and fascinating attractions. Independence Hall is etched in every American’s mind as this is the place that birthed a nation with the historic signing of the Declaration of Independence as well as the US Constitution.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the hall can be visited with a timed entry ticket that is free from the Independence Visitor Center, with guided tours taking in the room the famous documents were signed in by President John Hancock, as well as two future presidents, Benjamin Franklin, and 52 others from the 13 colonies.
Independence National Historic Park is also the home of the Liberty Bell, the fractured bronze bell that was once housed in the belfry of Independence Hall. Rung when the Declaration of Independence was publicly read for the first time, the last time it was used was for George Washington’s birthday in 1846.
Insider’s Tip: To round out the history lesson, Declaration House a short walk away from the park is where Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence.
Built in 1829, the Eastern State Penitentiary is an imposing castle-like structure that was once the world’s most expensive and high-tech prison. With an aim of rehabilitating criminals through solitary confinement rather than capital punishment and abuse, the facility led the way in reforming the judicial system.
Tours of the prison that closed in 1971 are available to the public and take visitors through this eerie and foreboding place where sections remain as they were during operation. Most famous of occupants? Al Capone!
Set aside at least a day to visit the Schuylkill River foreshore. Start at Logan Square to the west of the city centre where the Academy of Natural Sciences and the Franklin Institute offer child-friendly and interactive exhibits in the fields of natural history and science respectively.
The Barnes Foundation and Rodin Museum offers visitors spectacular art displays, but the Philadelphia Museum of Art at The Oval is the crowning glory of the city’s art scene. Famous for it’s exhibits, the building itself was made equally famous by being the location in the film Rocky where he runs up the steps.
Across the river is a kids paradise, housing the Philadelphia Zoo where primates, big cats and other animals from all over the world can be seen. The Please Touch Museum north of the zoo is aimed specifically at 3 to 12 year olds with imaginative and fun exhibits that will keep kids entertained for hours. There’s even a restored 1908 carousel!
Whether you have spent the day immersed in history, art, culture, or just arrived, the best place to sate the hunger is the Reading Terminal Market. With over 100 stalls in the country’s oldest continuously operating farmers market, the array of food on offer will make anyone’s mouth water!
Insider’s Tip: Philly Cheesesteaks may be delicious, but you can’t live on them for every meal! Try one of the cities favourite breakfast foods, scrapple, instead.
Located opposite Independence Hall in the heart of the city, the Kimpton Hotel Monaco is the perfect place for your needs after your business flights to Philadelphia.
Situated on Rittenhouse Square, the Rittenhouse Hotel is a boutique property for the discerning business traveller.
The nearby city of Wilmington lies at the mouth of the Delaware River to the southwest, while the university town of Princeton is less than an hour drive to the northeast. The resort area of Atlantic City is just over an hour drive to the southeast offering casinos and beaches.
Those looking to experience the cities of Eastern USA can travel easily between Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, and Boston on a self-drive itinerary. Alternatively, travel by train on the Amtrak network between the cities for a stress-free holiday or business trip.
