A canal built off the Rideau River through the downtown area of Ottawa creates a lovely scenic pathway through the capital city. Built between 1826 and 1832 as a military defence, today the surrounding green spaces are used as a recreational area during the summer with boating, and, when frozen over in the winter, for ice skating.

Stretching a total of 125 miles the waterway connects Ottawa to Kingston on Lake Ontario to the southwest. Recognised for its historical significance by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, visitors to Ottawa can view many of the cities remarkable sights from along the banks.

Parliament Hill

The historical ByWard Market located to the north of the canal, is a fantastic neighbourhood to wander on foot. One of the oldest and largest public markets in the country, the market area has existed since 1846 and has been lovingly restored. It is also the perfect place to try local favourites like poutine, chips topped with cheese curds and gravy.
