Things to See in Nashville

Country Music Sites

Nashville has earnt the name Music City for good reason, with an illustrious history of big name musicians such as Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, and Elvis Presley all gracing the stages and studios in the formative years of the country music scene.

The Ryman Auditorium, originally built in 1892, made a name for itself by hosting the Grand Ole Opry live radio show between 1943 and 1974. Backstage tours are available through dressing rooms complete with memorabilia, photos, and videos, as well as the opportunity to step out on stage, and even cut your own recording!

For a complete history of the country music scene, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum is a must, containing instruments, costumes, photographs, and temporary exhibits dedicated to the musicians. Want to see Elvis’s gold Cadillac, a 40 foot guitar, or just peruse the gold records of some greats? They’re all here!

Insider’s Tip: To further explore the industry that helped shape Nashville, the infamous RCA Studio B and the Johnny Cash Museum are also worth a visit!

Centennial Park

West of Downtown, Centennial Park offers visitors the chance to unwind while walking along winding trails in beautiful landscapes.

A surprise to be had is the full-scale replica of the Parthenon which was originally built of wood in 1897 for the state’s centenary, but was rebuilt in the 1930s and now houses a permanent art collection of 63 works by 19th and 20th century American painters. The focal point of the exhibit is a 42 foot tall statue of Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and war.

Mansions & Plantation Houses

Nashville is not just a city for music lovers, with a fantastic array of 19th century mansions and plantation houses that showcase the history of the area through stunning architecture and interiors. Belle Meade Plantation is a prime example where visitors are immersed in the period by guides in costume as they explore the grounds and buildings.

Belmont Mansion, built in the style of an Italian villa, provides another fine example from the 1850s, with elaborate gardens surrounding this 13 room house with original décor and furnishings. The Hermitage, the residence of the 7th President of the United States, Andrew Jackson, now stands as a National Historic Landmark and reveals a window into the home life of the president that is depicted on the $20 note.

Insider’s Tip: Keep an eye open at Belle Meade Plantation for evidence of the American Civil War when opposing forces fought in the front yard, and can still be seen in the massive stone columns.

Printer’s Alley & Broadway

Today, music is still the lifeblood of Nashville with venues along Broadway in Music Row and the historic Painter’s Alley in the city centre still drawing crowds.

Famous for the jazz, country, and blues sounds that continue to emanate from the Honky Tonk Bars that defied the prohibition laws of the early 20th century, locals and tourists alike wander from venue to venue on any given night, listening to music from the latest up-and-coming local acts.
