Things to See in Lima
Lima’s Historic Centre
Lima’s historic heart was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 for good reason. Plaza de Armas, often known as Plaza Mayor, holds pride of place within this district as the spot where Francisco Pizaro founded the city in 1535, and nowadays is surrounded by beautiful buildings including the Archbishop’s Palace, Municipal Palace, and Palacio de Gobierno, the official home of Peru’s President.
The district around the plaza also holds some of the most significant religious architecture in the city. The Convent of Santo Domingo to the west and the famous Basilica y Convento de San Francisco to the east provide an oasis of calm in the bustling heart of the city, with the Basilica offering visitors beautifully preserved rooms, gilded alters, and religious art.
Lima is also home many fantastic examples of colonial mansions, including the oldest house in the Americas, Casa di Aliaga, once owned by a conquistador.
Insider’s Tip: The Basilica and Convent of San Francisco has a slightly gruesome feature to explore also. The catacombs that lie beneath are home to an estimated 75,000 remains, but if this isn’t to your taste, the library within the Basilica holds an enormous amount of religious texts and is almost magical in appearance!
One of the trendiest and most upscale districts lines the Pacific Ocean. Miraflores is where you will find the best hotels, restaurants, bars, and nightlife in the city, as well as some of the most picturesque sights.
In the heart of the district lies Parque Kennedy, a teeming city park where people watching is the second most popular pastime… the first being the homeless cats that inhabit the park. The cats are friendly and cared for by a local NGO and can often be seen sidling up to people for a pat or lazing in the sun.
The coast of Miraflores is bounded by the El Malecon, a boardwalk that runs along the top of the cliffs providing unbridled views of the Pacific Ocean. The boardwalk winds through many parks and gardens including the Parque del Amor which is dotted with modern sculptures and colourful mosaics.
Things to Do in Lima
There have been civilisations living on the site of Lima for much longer than most realise. Located in the heart of Miraflores, Huaca Pacllana is a pre-Incan settlement dating back to between 300AD – 700AD.
Made of millions of adobe bricks, the huge pyramid was the political and ceremonial centre at the time and would have been used for spiritual ceremonies and sacrifices.Tours can be taken around the site during the day, and the site is creatively lit up at night giving a surreal experience.
Parque de la Reserva
A recent addition to Lima’s attractions, Parque de la Reserva was given a make-over in 2007 in an effort to create an interactive and fun area for locals and tourists alike. With a total of 13 fountains spread over the park, the best time to visit is after dark when the fountains are choreographed with a music and light show.
Famous the world over, Peruvian food has become more common in recent years and it’s easy to see why! Start your culinary journey with a visit to the Casa de la Gastronomia Peruana, a museum near Plaza de Armas showing the local and historical cuisine, customs, and ingredients.
Although many fantastic dishes are native to Peru, you can’t go past ceviche, a raw fish delicacy marinated in red chilli, onions, and either lemon or lime juice.
Insider’s Tip: The restaurant La Mar near the coast, headed by celebrity chef Gaston Acuio, has elevated the famous dish to sophisticated and delicious levels. Before eating, don’t forget to also try the nation’s refreshing cocktail aperitif, the pisco sour.
