Things to see in Hawaii

Submarine USS Bowfin at Pearl Harbor Hawaii
Pearl Harbor – Oahu Island

Etched into the pages of history, Pearl Harbor and the immortal words of President Roosevelt was made famous on the morning of December 7th 1941 when the Japanese attacked the military base located on Oahu Island. Today, the site of the fateful event is a National Historic Landmark and houses several centres to visit and explore.

Along with the Visitors Center, the site has 5 main attractions including memorials to the crews of the USS Arizona and USS Oklahoma, and the ability to board and explore the World War II Battleship USS Missouri, the Word War II submarine USS Bowfin, and the Pacific Aviation Museum. These memorials and displays are poignant reminders of what drew America into the biggest conflict of the century, and a must see on all holidays to Hawaii.

Insider’s Tip:Pearl Harbor is still an active military site and therefore has strict security guidelines for visitors. Some sites require prior booking so please plan your trip in advance.

Stargazing from Mauna Kea – Big Island

With so little light pollution the entire island chain of Hawaii is the perfect place for stargazing, but in particular the summit of Mauna Kea on Hawaii’s Big Island has the perfect conditions. At a height of nearly 14,000 feet, the summit has you above 40% of the atmosphere and 90% of water vapour making it the ideal place for undisrupted views of the cosmos.

Because of the unbeatable views, the top of Mauna Kea is dotted with the dome-shaped telescopes of several countries making it the largest collection of telescopes on Earth!

Insider’s Tip: Visitors can drive to the summit during daylight hours but must depart within 30 minutes of sunset. Because of this, joining a stargazing tour is the best way to experience the this spectacular view.

Get out in to Nature

First-time visitors to Hawaii are always left speechless by the natural beauty of the state, whether it be the lava flows in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, the idyllic beaches of Waikiki on Oahu Island, or the spectacular waterfalls and rainforests that dot all the islands; this paradise has something for everyone!

The adventures in nature don’t only apply to the land either, with boat tours operating from all the islands from late December to early May. Alternatively, grab a mask and snorkel and get up close and personal with the coral reefs and their inhabitants.

Many places around Hawaii can also be experienced on horseback making out-of-the-way sights such as Waipi’o Valley on Big Island both accessible and a memory to last a lifetime. So what are you waiting for; grab your walking shoes, your riding shoes, and your flippers, and experience Hawaii at its most amazing!

Insider’s Tip:Take a helicopter flight to Kauai Island and approach the rugged coastline from the air. I would wager money that the Jurassic Park theme song springs to mind!

Experience a Luau

The native Hawaiian and Polynesian cultures have several traditions that visitors can witness and get involved in. One of the most popular amongst tourists are the luaus, where guests are entertained with music, hula dancing, and fire twirling, along with a variety of activities such as basket weaving and lei making.

Wrap up the celebration with feasts of traditional Hawaiian foods and cocktails, and give thanks and celebrate the Hawaiian culture in a fun and filling experience!
