With an almost Californian feel, the Golden Mile is the perfect place to start exploring South Africa’s third largest city. The holiday and resort town of Umhlanga is located 15 miles north of Durban and offers visited with quieter beaches to relax on., but beaches are not the only thing to visit for. The seaside town also houses a number of historical attractions distinct to the KwaZulu Natal area.
Just inland from Umhlanga is Inanda Township and the Ohlange Institute, the location where Nelson Mandela voted in South Africa’s first democratic elections. This marks the start of the Inanda Heritage Trail which also includes sites such as Mahatma Gandhi’s Phoenix Settlement, and the Inanda Seminary, one of the country’s oldest schools for girls founded in 1869.
Day trips to the north of Umhlanga have you visiting the Isimangaliso Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site where hippos and crocodiles laze in the estuaries, giraffes, rhinos, and elephants graze, and turtles and whales inhabit the waters. This area is one of the best in all of Africa to see wild hippopotamus!
The road between Durban and Pietermaritsburg runs through a remarkable landscape, with gently rounded hills covered in scenic viewpoints surrounding the valley of the Umgeni River. The traditional lands of the Zulu people, visitors can experience a typical Zulu village at Phe-Zulu and see dance performances as well as the rituals of witch doctors.
Holidays to Durban are not complete without getting involved in one of their national pastimes, sport, and South Africa is famous for its rugby union, The local team, The Sharks, consistently rank highly in the country’s league and a visit to their home stadium, Mr Price Kings Park, for a match is guaranteed to get the blood pumping as 52,000 people chant and cheer for their team.
