The Golden Mile

With an almost Californian feel, the Golden Mile is the perfect place to start exploring South Africa’s third largest city. With paved promenades stretching the four mile length from Blue Lagoon to Addington Beach, there are numerous attractions to visit and cafes to relax in while watching the surfers and beach-goers in the warm Indian Ocean breeze. Safe to swim in, the beaches are protected by shark nets making them popular all year round.

The north end of the Golden Mile is highlighted by the Moses Mabhida Stadium built for the 2010 Rugby World Cup. Adventure seekers can take in the views of the city from the top of the stadium’s arch which can be reached by a Sky Car, or for those inclined, a climb of 500 steps. Watch as thrill-seekers take the plunge on the world’s highest swing from 220 metres high!

The south end is dominated by the uShaka Marine World Complex, comprising of the Wet & Wild Water Park, Village Walk Shopping Centre, and uShaka Sea World, one of the largest aquariums in the world. Experience up-close-and-personal exhibits by joining the Ocean Walker tour or the Shark Dive Experience for an extra special outing!

Insider’s Tip: Make sure to visit The Cargo Hold for lunch or dinner at uShaka Marine World for a truly unique dining experience. Bathed in the blue light from the surrounding tanks while sharks swim past you is a memorable way to enjoy some exquisite cuisine!


The holiday and resort town of Umhlanga is located 15 miles north of Durban and offers visited with quieter beaches to relax on., but beaches are not the only thing to visit for. The seaside town also houses a number of historical attractions distinct to the KwaZulu Natal area.

Just inland from Umhlanga is Inanda Township and the Ohlange Institute, the location where Nelson Mandela voted in South Africa’s first democratic elections. This marks the start of the Inanda Heritage Trail which also includes sites such as Mahatma Gandhi’s Phoenix Settlement, and the Inanda Seminary, one of the country’s oldest schools for girls founded in 1869.

Day trips to the north of Umhlanga have you visiting the Isimangaliso Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site where hippos and crocodiles laze in the estuaries, giraffes, rhinos, and elephants graze, and turtles and whales inhabit the waters. This area is one of the best in all of Africa to see wild hippopotamus!

The Valley of 1000 Hills

The road between Durban and Pietermaritsburg runs through a remarkable landscape, with gently rounded hills covered in scenic viewpoints surrounding the valley of the Umgeni River. The traditional lands of the Zulu people, visitors can experience a typical Zulu village at Phe-Zulu and see dance performances as well as the rituals of witch doctors.
