Things to See in Baltimore

Fort McHenry National Monument

The historical heart of Baltimore lies on a point into the harbour. The fort, originally built in 1798, was held by American forces in the War of 1812 against the British Armies and successfully defended the city.

The fort was immortalised by the poet and writer Francis Scott Key in 1814 when he saw the garrison flag raised over the fort to signify the American victory over the British. Penning the poem Defence of Fort M’Henry, the piece later became known as the Star Spangled Banner.

Insider’s Tip: The sprawling grassed lands surrounding the fort and overlooking the bay are popular with picnickers and afford visitors spectacular views of the Baltimore skyline.

Fells Point

This historic waterfront community is a pleasure to walk and explore, with 18th and 19th century homes and storefronts lining the picturesque streets. With strong ties to its colonial past evident in the street names such as Shakespeare, Lancaster, Thames, and Fleet Street, the district offers a relaxed shopping and dining experience.

During the baseball season, the city comes alive with fans streaming to Oriole Park at Camden Yards to watch the city’s team, the Baltimore Orioles, play. Built in the 1990’s in the style of baseball’s retro years, the stadium offers visitors one of the most authentic experiences in the country.
